Woman Dies In Swampscott Condo Fire: Essex DA

SWAMPSCOTT, MA — A 69-year-old woman who was rescued from a condo fire in Swampscott on Thursday morning later died at Salem Hospital.

The Essex County District Attorney's Office said the woman was rescued from a fourth-floor unit in the condo complex on Loring Avenue and taken to Salem Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.

Pending family notifications, her identity was not scheduled to be released on Thursday.

The fire is under investigation by the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit assigned to DA Paul Tucker's office, the Swampscott Police Department Detective Unit, the Office of State Fire Marshal Jon Davine, the Swampscott Fire Department, and the Massachusetts Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

The fire was reported shortly before 7 a.m. at 1 Loring Ave. Swampscott Fire Chief Graham Archer told NBC Boston that firefighters arriving at the four-story building saw heavy smoke coming from the top floor and found heavy fire in one fourth-floor unit as crews moved inside.

Archer said the building was fully sprinklered, which helped contain the fire to the single unit.

Fire crews were still cleaning up later Thursday morning and working to accommodate other residents from the building, Archer said.

Archer said he expected most residents would be able to return to their homes later Thursday.

No other injuries were reported in the information provided.
