📰 News we're reading

1. Norfolk County Sheriff's Office to host 'House to House for Heroes' veterans' outreach in Avon on September 26th (franklinmatters.org) — Norfolk County's 'House to House for Heroes' veterans outreach, which has already visited Walpole, is heading to Avon on Saturday, September 26, 2026, and welcomes volunteers from surrounding towns. Starting 9:30 a.m. at Avon's VFW Post 8892, volunteers will go door-to-door sharing information on benefits, health care, housing, and employment resources with local veterans, rain or shine.

2. Largest Applebee's franchisee, based in Independence, sued over employee data breach (cleveland.com) — A major data breach at the company that owns the Walpole Applebee's may have exposed sensitive information for thousands of current and former employees, including at least one who worked in Walpole. Lawsuits say hackers accessed Social Security and bank details, and some affected workers later reported fraudulent charges and increased scam contacts while seeking class-action relief in federal court.

3. Mass. Fire Departments Rank Fourth in Response Reporting (plymptonhalifaxexpress.com) — Walpole's fire department is among several early adopters of a new national emergency reporting system that helped Massachusetts rank fourth in the country for response reporting. The NERIS platform lets departments log near-real-time incident data, improving funding requests, resource planning, and community risk reduction, and giving residents and officials clearer insight into local fire and medical responses.

4. Yankees blank Red Sox in series opener (pressherald.com) — A New York Yankees–Boston Red Sox showdown quietly highlighted Walpole native Cam Schlittler, who again dominated his hometown team with eight strikeouts over 5⅔ innings. Despite five walks, Schlittler held Boston scoreless in a tight 1-0 game that tightened the American League playoff race and reinforced his growing reputation as a Red Sox killer.
