'A prayer answered': Homeward JXN aims to house 300 chronically homeless in two years (wlbt.com) — A new initiative called Homeward JXN is launching in Jackson to provide a year of rent-free housing for 300 chronically homeless people and rapid rehousing for about 1,100 more over two years. Backed by city contracts and federal HOME-ARP funds, the program will hire local staff, partner with landlords, and coordinate service providers, while some existing nonprofits question whether outside consultants and limited support will be enough.

Hezekiah Watkins gets birthday wishes at Mississippi Civil Rights Museum (northsidesun.com) — Jackson civil rights veteran Hezekiah Watkins just celebrated his 79th birthday at the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum, sharing how a teenage arrest in Jackson led him into the Freedom Rides. Recently honored with a city apology and a Jackson street named for him, he urged residents to stay engaged, vote, and speak up when they see injustice.

4. Could you use SNAP to pay your water bill? New plan proposes change (clarionledger.com) — Jackson residents facing rising JXN Water bills could eventually be allowed to use leftover SNAP benefits to help pay for water under a proposal from Public Service Commissioner De'Keither Stamps. The plan wouldn't increase SNAP amounts but would give struggling households more flexibility as Jackson's water rates climb and more hikes are projected through 2029.
