East Brunswick Police Introduce Safe Driving Initiative For Older Drivers
The new Silver Wheels program covers vision, medications, daytime driving and distractions.
EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ — The East Brunswick Police Department has launched a new educational program to help older drivers stay safe on the road.
The program, called Silver Wheels, comes from the department’s Traffic Safety Section. Police said it is meant to promote safe driving habits, raise awareness and help mature drivers stay confident behind the wheel.
The announcement comes as Halloween approaches, when more children and families are out walking through neighborhoods. Police said drivers of all ages should stay alert and use extra caution during that time.

Through Silver Wheels, the Traffic Safety Section will share safety tips aimed at mature drivers. They include:
- Vision checks: Get regular eye exams and make sure you can see clearly.
- Medication awareness: Understand how medications can affect alertness and reaction time.
- Daytime driving: Plan trips for daylight hours and avoid difficult driving conditions when possible.
- Vehicle comfort: Adjust mirrors, seats and the steering wheel properly.
- Eliminating distractions: Keep your attention on the road and stay off your phone while driving.
- Staying flexible: Stay mobile enough to steer, check blind spots and operate a vehicle safely.
Police said age should never be a barrier to safe, confident driving. They said education, awareness and proactive safety steps can help mature drivers keep their independence while protecting everyone on the road.
