The Hoboken school district has a high school, middle school, and three elementary schools.

The three charter schools in town are considered separate districts, although the Hoboken board may influence some decisions regarding the charter schools.

In 2021, the district proposed a $241 million plan to build a new high school and renovate other buildings, but it was voted down. (See why.) The district is now holding community engagement meetings to plan for the future.

Longer Questions

1. What do you think is the biggest problem facing your electorate, and how do you hope to solve it?

The biggest challenges facing our schools right now are space and aging buildings.

Many of our facilities are over a century old, and our district has grown by more than 1,000 students over the past decade. Our programs and student achievements are thriving, but accommodating this growth responsibly requires dedicated planning. The Board is looking at every available option, from making smarter use of our current buildings to exploring creative public-private partnerships, pursuing every possible dollar in state funding, and planning for our short-term and long-term needs responsibly. Most importantly, any solution has to be built with the community.

This summer and fall, we’ve held community information sessions and roundtables to hear directly from residents, and our next session is on Monday, Oct. 26, at Hoboken High School at 6 p.m. I hope everyone will come out and join the conversation.

2. Why do you believe you are the most qualified people for the spots?

I believe Together for Tomorrow, consisting of myself, Sheillah Dallara, and Adrian Oxman, is the most qualified team for the Board because of our proven experience and deep roots in the Hoboken community.

Personally, I have served on the Hoboken Board of Education for 12 years, including multiple terms as President and Vice President and serving as the chairperson for both the Finance and Wellness Committees. During that time, I’ve worked closely with Dr. Christine Johnson and the entire Board to help drive the district’s progress. When I was first elected in 2014, we had our work cut out for us. The Board set out to close academic gaps, broaden extracurriculars, and make sure our students are genuinely prepared for college and careers.

I am so proud of the real results we have delivered. The Hoboken Public School District is ranked the #1 School District in Hudson County by Niche, and the NJ Department of Education has once again certified us as a “High Performing” district through the NJQSAC process. We feel the progress across the board, in our growing enrollment, strong athletic programs, award-winning arts, championship Model UN and Debate teams, and impressive college acceptances and scholarships.

What I love most about my work on the Board is that it is never truly done. We are a productive, dedicated Board always looking for ways to improve and tackle new challenges, and that is the focus and energy I’ll bring if given the opportunity to serve another three-year term.
