• Improvements eyed for Main Street (starnewsgroup.com) — Manasquan officials are moving ahead with plans that could add new annual fees for Main Street businesses through a mandatory registration and a proposed Business Improvement District, with an ordinance introduction expected Oct. 5. The BID would create an 11-member board of mostly local business owners, managing an estimated $58,000 yearly budget for promotions and improvements along Main Street.
   

• Syringes wash up on beaches in Shore towns (starnewsgroup.com) — Syringes and other debris have recently washed up on Manasquan's beaches, including about 60 needles found near the Manasquan Inlet in late August, prompting cleanups and safety warnings. Officials and environmental groups say heavy rains and combined sewer overflows upstream likely pushed household medical waste to the Jersey Shore, and they're urging residents not to touch needles and to report any sightings immediately.
