Native Plant Sale, Environmental Fair Set For Brentwood This Weekend

BRENTWOOD, NY — Long Islanders looking to make their yards more wildlife-friendly can shop for locally grown native plants and meet environmental experts during a two-day event in Brentwood this weekend.

The Long Island Native Plant Initiative will hold its Native Plant Sale and Environmental Fair on Saturday, Sept. 12, and Sunday, Sept. 13, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. both days at the Sisters of St. Joseph, 1725 Brentwood Road.

Visitors will be able to purchase native wildflowers, grasses, shrubs, trees and vines. Gardening experts will also be on hand to answer questions and discuss how native plants can support birds, butterflies, bees and other wildlife, according to organizers.

The environmental fair will feature local education, gardening and conservation organizations, including the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society, Brentwood Public Library, Group for the East End, South Shore Audubon Society, Suffolk Alliance for Pollinators, Long Island Invasive Species Management Area and ReWild Long Island.

Representatives from Hofstra University's Bird Sanctuary and sustainability programs are also expected to participate, along with other local groups.

Organizers said the event is intended to connect residents with experts and provide ideas for protecting the environment and incorporating native plants into home gardens and landscapes.

Purchases made during the sale will support the Long Island Native Plant Initiative's work to protect and restore native plant life across Long Island.
