• Nor'easter floods coastal communities, leaves thousands without power (trihamletnews.com) — Commack saw about 5.8 inches of rain during last weekend's nor'easter, one of the higher totals reported in Suffolk County as strong winds and heavy downpours swept Long Island. The storm flooded several South Shore communities, temporarily halted Sayville Ferry Service, and knocked out power to more than 128,000 PSEG Long Island customers before most service was restored by Monday night. Coastal erosion was also reported along Fire Island and at Smith Point County Park.

• Island Empanada closes Rocky Point and Shirley stores as costs climb (greaterlongisland.com) — Commack residents still have a nearby Island Empanada, even as the chain closes its Rocky Point and Shirley locations due to rising costs and more cautious diners. Founder Roy Pelaez says higher expenses and increased competition have pushed the business down to four stores, including Commack, Merrick, Medford, and Ronkonkoma. Despite the downsizing, he notes the remaining locations are performing well after selling millions of empanadas since 2011.
