Long Beach City Council plans to declare 9/11 holiday (liherald.com) — Long Beach officials are moving to make September 11 an official city holiday for municipal workers, reinforcing the community's long-running Virginia Avenue Garden of Remembrance ceremony. At this year's service, local leaders, clergy, and residents honored neighbors lost to 9/11 and related illnesses, while the city manager outlined next steps, including union talks, before a final council vote within the coming year.
   

2. Bakithi Kumalo brings Graceland legacy to Long Beach (liherald.com) — Long Beach music lovers recently saw legendary bassist Bakithi Kumalo perform with local youth at a Long Beach Arts Council benefit at Bright Eye Beer Co., celebrating the 40th anniversary of Paul Simon's "Graceland." Kumalo, who vacations in Long Beach, is now collaborating with local leaders and Studio Noir to create more mentoring and performance opportunities for young musicians in town, with talk of future shows.
   

3. She evacuated from the Pentagon as a child on 9/11. Now she's running to honor those who died that day (abc15.com) — A 9/11 remembrance run setting off from Long Beach will carry local significance as participants head to Ground Zero, pausing to mark key moments from that day. Air Force Capt. Hanna Born, who survived the Pentagon attack as a child, is joining the 34.3 Foundation's route while also using her own Run to Remember 2977 project to raise money and awareness year-round.
   

4. Suffolk County 9/11 Memorial honors 178 local victims (liherald.com) — Long Beach residents are reminded that their city's own 9/11 plaques at City Hall are part of a broader Long Island network of memorials. A Long Beach-based architect, Barry Silberstang, designed Suffolk County's Garden of Remembrance in Hauppauge, creating an "inaccessible garden" of etched Lexan panels that gives families a sacred, tangible place to honor 178 county victims.
