With Democrats now controlling the legislature, leaders are stressing collaboration as they scrutinize spending, including a possible new housing development corporation. Residents can speak out at public hearings on October 1 before the final vote October 6.
   

2. Syracuse to host inaugural Pride and Prosperity Summit (localsyr.com) — Syracuse is hosting a free Pride and Prosperity Summit for LGBTQ+ professionals and entrepreneurs on Friday, October 9, at the INSPYRE Innovation Hub downtown. Expect panels, workshops, networking, and even free professional headshots, all geared toward building careers, businesses, and economic opportunity within Syracuse's LGBTQ+ community. Registration is required by October 5 and limited to 100 attendees.
   

3. Local mental health expert says back to school can be stressful for youth (waer.org) — Syracuse families are being urged to watch kids' moods closely as the new school year ramps up, with NAMI Syracuse offering tools to help children open up about stress, bullying, and anxiety. Syracuse City Schools already host six in-school mental health clinics, with two more coming in January 2027, and anyone in crisis can reach trained counselors by calling 988.
   

4. As union leaders push Syracuse officials for higher blue-collar wages, city councilors voice support (localsyr.com) — Syracuse city councilors are backing union efforts to raise blue-collar wages, arguing the city's official "living wage" is too low for workers who keep streets plowed and trash collected. With key contracts expired, residency rules under scrutiny, and dozens of CDL driver vacancies, officials warn snow removal and other core services could suffer without better pay.
   

5. Syracuse man pleads guilty to seriously injuring man by repeatedly stomping on his head (syracuse.com) — A Syracuse man has pleaded guilty to first-degree assault for a brutal, random attack on East Willow Street that left another man in a coma with life-altering injuries. Prosecutors agreed to a 15-year prison sentence, with the option to reopen the case as a homicide if the victim later dies. Sentencing is scheduled for October 20.
