• $215M approved for water, sewer upgrades across 26 counties after Helene damage (newschannel9.com) — Spruce Pine is set to receive more than $5.5 million to repair and upgrade its wastewater treatment plant and collection system after damage from Helene, part of a $215 million statewide package. State officials say the funds aim to make local water and sewer systems more resilient, replacing aging infrastructure and better protecting communities when future storms hit.

• Mitchell Animal Rescue hosting pop-up Cat Cafe in downtown Spruce Pine (wataugademocrat.com) — A pop-up Cat CafĆ© is coming to downtown Spruce Pine April 30–May 2, turning the Visitor Center on Locust Street into a cozy space to meet adoptable cats. Mitchell County Animal Rescue and local Youth to Youth students are teaming up to offer cat play sessions, a student-designed mural unveiling, and a fundraiser supporting area nonprofits.

• Agnes P. Pembroke (ourlocalcommunityonline.com) — Longtime Spruce Pine resident Agnes P. Pembroke, 94, has passed away, with a requiem mass set for Friday, April 17 at 1 p.m. at St. Lucien Catholic Church and burial at Spruce Pine Memorial Cemetery. A resident since 1964 and active in the church’s Woman’s Guild, she is remembered for her love of family, gardening, and entertaining.
