1. Washington County opens new common pleas courtroom (newsandsentinel.com) — Washington County has opened a new Common Pleas Courtroom C in the Marietta courthouse, giving more space, privacy, and security for domestic relations cases like divorce and child custody. The upgraded room adds conference spaces, better technology for remote participation, and backup capacity when visiting judges use other courtrooms, while keeping most project spending with local firms.
   

2. Local student wins Elks national essay contest (mariettatimes.com) — A Marietta fifth grader at Veritas Classical Academy has become the first Ohio student to win the national Elks Americanism Essay Contest, earning recognition at the state Elks convention. His essay, inspired by playing cello for local seniors, highlights how small acts of service can strengthen community. Local Elks and teachers say his win showcases both his talent and Marietta's strong support for youth.
   

3. Wilde's 'The Importance of Being Earnest' comes to Muskingum Park (newsandsentinel.com) — Marietta College students are bringing Oscar Wilde's comedy "The Importance of Being Earnest" to the Muskingum Park gazebo with free outdoor shows starting Thursday at 8 p.m. Performances continue on select evenings through Sept. 19, offering Sternwheel Festival visitors and residents a family-friendly alternative under the stars, complete with British accents, fast-paced humor, and a full three-act staging.
   

4. Briget A. Baker (mchnews.com) — An area family is mourning Briget A. Baker, 54, who was born in Marietta and later lived in McConnelsville before passing away Sept. 4 at Genesis Hospital in Zanesville. A Fort Frye graduate and longtime caregiver, she leaves behind three daughters, four grandchildren, her parents, and siblings. The family has chosen not to hold services at this time.
   

5. Ward 'Butch' Murrey, Jr. (journal-leader.com) — Friends and family are remembering Ward "Butch" Murrey Jr., who was born in Marietta in 1939 and later became a deeply involved civic leader in Caldwell. He served on the volunteer fire department, local boards, and the state library system before passing away Sept. 8 at age 86. Cremation has taken place, with a private family graveside service planned later in Olive Cemetery.
