For Gresham residents, the case is especially close to home because 22-year-old Kristin Smith, identified as being from Gresham, is among those he's charged with murdering, and prosecutors are pushing to consolidate all cases into one major trial.

• Gresham begins full replacement of Vance Park playground (theoutlookonline.com subscription) — Vance Park's playground in Gresham is being completely replaced this fall, with new climbing structures, swings, and even a large outdoor musical instrument, all funded by the city's parks budget. Work is underway now, the playground area is fenced off, and the new equipment is expected to be ready for families by the end of October.

Hood Community College is launching its 60th anniversary with a kickoff celebration at Downtown Gresham's Third Thursday Street Fair on Sept. 17, featuring a mayoral proclamation and community activities. Over the next year, the college plans new scholarships, storytelling projects, and recognition of key partnerships, highlighting MHCC's economic and educational impact on Gresham and East Multnomah County.
