More Red Light Cameras Coming Soon To Lower Merion

After launching the program this year, the township is bringing the red light cameras to two more intersections.

LOWER MERION, PA — Lower Merion's first automated red light camera has resulted in over 1,200 citations in a few months. The township is about to install two more.

During the spring, the township activated a red light camera at Remington Road and Lancaster Avenue. There were 1,463 warnings issued during the 60-day warning period.

Ticketing began July 13, resulting in 922 citations through the end of August.

The camera has caught 1,207 violators as of Thursday, when Police Commissioner Andy Block shared the data at the Lower Merion Board of Commissioners meeting. (Here's the meeting video.)

Red light cameras will be stationed at two more intersections in the coming months, Block said:

  • Haverford Station Road at Lancaster Avenue: expected to be installed in November.
  • Montgomery Avenue and Airdale Road: police hope to install the camera by the end of January, if the winter weather cooperates.

Under the ordinance, each intersection must have signs informing drivers of the photo enforcement. And once an intersection is equipped with cameras, a temporary warning period will ensue.

Last year, the township commissioners voted unanimously to set up a red light camera program and to first deploy the technology at Lancaster and Remington. A study found that most of the township's red light violations happened at this intersection, and the two where cameras will be installed soon.

After officers review each picture, the registered vehicle owner is mailed a $100 citation. The violations don't impact your driving record or insurance rates.
