'Big Boy' Passing Back Through Montco As Journey Continues: What To Know

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, PA — Union Pacific's "Big Boy" No. 4014 is passing back through Montgomery County on Monday, as it moves from its display point in south Philadelphia back to its overnight resting place in King of Prussia.

The world's largest and most powerful steam engine departed Intrepid Avenue and League Island Boulevard at 9 a.m. Monday.

It's route Monday will retrace its steps from July 3, passing along the Schuylkill River and through Bala Cynwyd, Lower Merion, West Conshohocken, Bridgeport, Norristown, and into Abrams Yard in King of Prussia.

An exact time schedule for Monday's route has not been released by Union Pacific.

While the passage of Big Boy was widely celebrated by local train enthusiasts and Fourth of July weekend revelers, it was fraught with the consequences of the extreme heat. Dozens were treated by emergency responders for heat exhaustion and related symptoms at its whistle stops, and the display in Philadelphia was shut down early due to the heat.

Big Boy will not be on display overnight in King of Prussia, and will depart Tuesday morning for Lebanon. Its Tuesday route will follow the same course out as last week, passing once more through Valley Forge, Phoenixville, Royersford, and Pottstown, with no stops scheduled until Lebanon.

The steam engine has numerous stops planned through the end of July across the country, including Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Colorado, and ending where it started in Cheyenne, Wyoming.
