Montco 'Reentry Simulation' Puts Officials Through Life After Prison
The event focused on barriers faced by inmates when trying to rejoin society.
EAGLEVILLE, PA — More than 100 Montgomery County officials, staff, and volunteers joined in a reentry simulation last week that aimed to recreate the conditions inmates face when they get out of prison.
The simulation aimed to increase awareness of reentry challenges and common barriers to rejoining society. Some issues faced during the simulation included obtaining identification, getting a job, finding reliable transportation, working through probation, and finding food and shelter.
“There are consequences to breaking the law, but that shouldn't be a life sentence," Montgomery County Commissioner Jamila Winder shared in a statement. "I've seen firsthand what it's like to have a family member reenter the community after being incarcerated, and I know we, as a society, have a lot of work to do."

The event is held annually, though it changes every year as the reality of incarcerated individuals changes. This year, particular focus was placed on housing insecurity, a major issue around the country.
A panel discussion was held after the event where former prisoners spoke with participants about what they experienced.
