Changing how Newport County responds to children's mental health crises (newportri.com) — Families in Newport and across Newport County now have 24/7 access to Mobile Response and Stabilization Services through Newport Mental Health, sending clinicians directly to homes, schools, and community settings during a child's behavioral crisis. The program has already handled hundreds of local calls, helping avoid hospitalizations and connecting kids to longer-term care. Residents can call 401-846-1213, option 1, any time for help.
   

2. Newport holds third workshop Sept. 17 on shifting stormwater costs to a fee based on paved area (whatsupnewp.com) — Newport residents are invited to a Sept. 17 City Hall workshop on a proposal to shift stormwater costs from sewer bills to a separate fee based on each property's paved and roof area. Officials will explain how the new "Equivalent Residential Unit" method might affect different properties and stress that no specific rates are set yet, with any change still requiring two City Council hearings.
   

3. Newport Community School Trains Students for Health Care Future (newportthisweek.com) — Newport Community School's CNA training program on Aquidneck Island is helping local high school students and adults move directly into health care jobs with state exam prep, clinical experience, and job-search support. With fall classes starting soon and scholarships, SNAP waivers, and payment plans available, Newport-area residents can earn credentials and explore additional free training in hospitality, lodging, and cardio phlebotomy/EKG.

Newport shootout suspect left trail of arrests back in Texas (newportri.com) — Newport residents are learning more about Brendan Norris, the man killed during an Aug. 26 gunfire exchange with Newport police aboard an allegedly stolen sailboat in Newport Harbor. Court records show he previously attended a local marine trades school, faced an assault charge after an incident outside a Newport bar, and had a probation history in Texas tied to a 7-Eleven robbery.
   

5. ASMFC 84th Annual Meeting Details, Preliminary Agenda, and Public Comment Guidelines (savingseafood.org) — Newport will host the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission's 84th Annual Meeting Nov. 9–12 at the Hotel Viking, with most business sessions open to the public and hybrid participation options. Local readers involved in fisheries, conservation, or coastal policy can register, secure discounted hotel rates by Oct. 12, and submit written comments on management issues ahead of the meeting.
