David Morales, a democratic socialist, as mayor after he defeated incumbent Brett Smiley in the Democratic primary. Supporters tout plans for rent control and social housing, while former Mayor Joe Paolino and others question how Morales will balance ideology with practical governance as November's general election approaches.
   

2. He lost the instrument he loved. Then a Providence officer stepped in (providencejournal.com) — A small act of kindness in Providence is getting big attention after city police officer Rob Raso arranged a replacement saxophone for Manny, the elderly street musician often heard near Route 146 and Charles Street. A passing nurse watched Raso deliver the instrument so Manny could resume playing, highlighting the compassion shown by local first responders and inspiring calls for more everyday kindness.
   

3. Countdown to Rhode Island Comic Con: Let's hear it for "The Boys" (turnto10.com) — Rhode Island Comic Con returns to downtown Providence November 6–8, filling the Convention Center, The AMP, and Omni Providence Hotel with more than 100 guests from TV, film, comics, and games. Fans can meet stars from "The Boys," Ken Jeong, George Takei, and more, with panels, photo ops, and tickets already on sale through Ticketmaster and Toy Vault locations.

Bat at Providence zoo prompts rabies warning from RI health officials (nbcboston.com) — If you visited Roger Williams Park Zoo's water play area in Providence on or before Aug. 24 and might have touched a bat, Rhode Island health officials want to hear from you. A bat showing signs of rabies was safely discarded but couldn't be tested, so the state is urging anyone with possible contact to call its infectious disease epidemiology line to assess whether treatment is needed.
   

5. Rhode Island Supreme Court Strikes Down Liquor License Exemption Law (memesita.com) — A Rhode Island Supreme Court ruling has thrown the liquor license of Wayland Square's Estiatorio Fili into doubt, likely leaving the Providence restaurant dry and forcing a shift toward brunch-focused menus. The decision struck down a special legislative exemption used to grant its license, raising constitutional questions and potentially jeopardizing similar exemptions for other establishments across Providence and the rest of Rhode Island.
