📰 News we're reading

1. U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to begin Lower Charleston Harbor maintenance dredging (dredgewire.com) — Maintenance dredging in the lower Charleston Harbor is set to begin this month, keeping the federal shipping channel safe and deep for commercial and military vessels. A $28 million contract will fund work on turning basins and 19 miles of channel, with completion expected by next fall. Boaters are urged to use extra caution around active dredges and monitor navigation alerts.

2. New CCSD tool will offer parents insight into student screen time (counton2.com) — Charleston County School District is rolling out a new analytics tool to show families how students use district-issued devices, including websites and apps. Guided by a technology task force, CCSD is pairing screen-time expectations with the Lightspeed Parent Portal so parents can better support balanced, healthy tech habits while teachers continue hands-on learning in classrooms.

3. Charleston Housing Authority addresses mayor's concerns over CEO investigation (abcnews4.com subscription) — Charleston's Housing Authority board is responding to Mayor William Cogswell's request for clarity on an ongoing independent investigation involving new CEO Nathan Simms Jr. Leaders stress transparency as they work to complete the review and maintain public trust, especially with major affordable housing projects on the horizon that will rely on strong community support.

4. Proposed 106 CofC Coming Street project gets conceptual approval with conditions (live5news.com) — Charleston's Board of Architectural Review has given conditional conceptual approval to a new College of Charleston residence hall on Coming Street, while delaying decisions on how to honor the historic burial ground beneath it. The 608-bed Coming Street Commons project would replace an empty lot that once held a YWCA tied to local civil rights history. Preservation advocates want more archaeological answers before the city moves further ahead.

5. Meet Your Island Neighbors: Al and Wallis Cannon (isleofpalmsmagazine.com) — A new profile spotlights former Charleston County Sheriff Al Cannon and his decades of service, from merging county law enforcement agencies to expanding the jail that now bears his name. Cannon and his wife Wallis reflect on starting a chaplaincy program, lessons from Hurricane Hugo, and how those preparations helped Charleston respond more effectively after 9/11. Their story underscores how one family's public service has shaped local safety and resilience.
