Rabid raccoon confirmed in Charleston County, one dog exposed (abcnews4.com) — Health officials have confirmed a rabid raccoon near Swan Avenue and Swallow Drive in Charleston County, where one dog was exposed and is now quarantined. Residents are urged to contact the Charleston DHEC office if they, someone they know, or their pets may have had contact with the animal, and to keep pets' rabies vaccinations up to date.
   

2. City of Charleston announces Labor Day closures, service delays (abcnews4.com) — Charleston residents should plan for one-day delays in garbage and trash pickup across the Peninsula, West Ashley, James Island, Johns Island, Daniel Island, and Cainhoy due to Labor Day. All city recreation facilities will be closed Monday, though the Charleston Municipal Golf Course stays open, and yard debris and bulk pickup will shift later in the week for many neighborhoods.
   

3. Free-standing emergency room advances through approval process on James Island (live5news.com) — A new Roper St. Francis freestanding emergency room is moving through approvals on James Island, aiming to offset longer trips after Roper Hospital relocates from downtown Charleston to North Charleston. The Folly Road site, split between the Town of James Island and the City of Charleston, will offer full emergency services and could open by late 2027, improving response times for nearby residents.
   

4. Prominent Charleston area attorney, Joe Rice, dies at 72 (counton2.com) — Residents in the Charleston area are mourning prominent attorney Joe Rice, who died suddenly Thursday at age 72 at his Mount Pleasant office. Known nationally for leading the landmark Big Tobacco settlement and locally for philanthropy benefiting Charleston-area children, Rice leaves a legacy his firm Motley Rice says it will continue honoring through its ongoing work.
   

5. Over $7 million approved to fund Charleston County Public Library Main Library renovations (live5news.com) — Charleston County has approved more than $7.6 million to renovate the Main Library, the final major project from a voter-backed 2014 referendum. The downtown Charleston County Public Library branch will stay closed for about two years while spaces are reconfigured by age, technology resources are expanded, and the physical book collection is refreshed, with all services remaining free for the community.
