• Town of Unicoi names new police chief (wjhl.com) — Unicoi’s leaders have hired Cecil Hobson as the town’s new police chief, unanimously backing him after a regional search. Hobson, a longtime North Carolina law officer who trained in Tennessee, plans to strengthen partnerships with neighboring agencies and quickly fill an open full-time patrol position to stabilize the young department’s leadership and service to residents.

• Unicoi Co. removes massive boulder causing public safety hazard from residential roadway (wjhl.com) — Unicoi County road crews have broken up and removed a massive boulder that was threatening drivers and mail carriers along Unaka Springs Road near Erwin. Officials say they couldn’t wait for outside approvals, shutting the road and tackling the hazard immediately to restore safer access for residents and essential services despite uncertain funding.
