📰 News we're reading

1. Judge Lina Hidalgo calls for special meeting on Harris County Flock camera contract (click2houston.com) — Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo is pushing for a special commissioners court meeting to scrutinize the county's Flock license plate reader contract, citing missing privacy safeguards and oversight. For Houston-area residents, the debate now includes HPD investigations into officer use of the system and nearby cities reconsidering Flock, raising big questions about crime-fighting technology versus civil liberties and data security.

2. TxDOT's $10.6B plan: See which Houston freeways get overhauls (lmtonline.com) — Houston drivers face years of major freeway changes as TxDOT's new 10-year Unified Transportation Program steers about $10.6 billion toward projects in the Houston District. The biggest work centers on I-45, I-10, and I-69, including a $2.2 billion rebuild of the I-45/I-10/I-69 interchange and added non-tolled managed lanes that could significantly reshape daily commutes.

3. Suspect charged in fatal shooting of man, woman at Houston apartment complex (fox26houston.com) — Houston police have arrested 53-year-old Derrick Duane Jackson and charged him with capital murder after a man and woman were found fatally shot at a southwest Houston apartment complex leasing office Thursday evening. Both victims, ages 47 and 67, were pronounced dead at the scene, and investigators are still determining a motive while awaiting formal identification from the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.

4. Dead fish in Houston waterways? Wildlife officials say that's natural (fox26houston.com) — If you've noticed dead fish in Houston bayous like Brays, state wildlife officials say recent stormwater likely disrupted oxygen levels, causing natural "fish kills" rather than a major pollution event. Still, Brays Bayou is considered impaired for bacteria, so anyone fishing nearby is urged to check Texas Parks and Wildlife consumption advisories before eating their catch.

5. Labor Day gas prices: Houston drivers paying nearly $1 more per gallon than last year (click2houston.com) — Houston drivers are paying about $3.68 a gallon this Labor Day, nearly 92 cents more than a year ago and still below the national average of $4.12. That jump adds roughly $14 to filling a 15-gallon tank, pushing many local residents to drive less or hunt for cheaper stations as they plan holiday road trips.
