Is Apple's $1,999 Foldable iPhone Worth It? Here's What You Actually Get For The Price

It's official: For the first time ever, you can buy an iPhone that folds.

Apple unveiled the iPhone Duo on Sept. 9, a new $1,999 iPhone that opens up to reveal a screen closer in size to a small tablet. It's easily one of the biggest changes Apple has made to the iPhone in years — but it's also $800 more than the new iPhone 18 Pro.

So, is a folding screen really worth nearly $2,000? Before you start mentally justifying the splurge — or immediately writing it off — here's what you're actually getting for the price.

First things first: How does a foldable iPhone work?

Think phone on the outside, mini-tablet on the inside.

Closed, the Duo has a 5.4-inch screen that works like a regular iPhone. Open it and you get a 7.6-inch display — the largest screen Apple has ever put on an iPhone.

That bigger screen isn't just for watching videos. You can put two apps side by side, compare webpages, drag content between supported apps or prop the phone up partially folded for hands-free FaceTime and video watching.

And yes, Apple has addressed the inevitable question about the line down the middle. The company says the inner display was designed to minimize the appearance of the crease where the phone folds.

OK, but what does $1,999 get you?

The Duo starts with 256GB of storage and uses the same A20 Pro chip found in the iPhone 18 Pro. It also comes with Apple's latest AI features and a 48-megapixel dual-camera system.

But the real reason for that eye-popping price is the foldable design. The iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199, so you're paying an $800 premium for the Duo's larger folding display and the features Apple built around it.

The Duo can also do a few things a regular iPhone can't. Someone you're photographing can see themselves on the outer screen while you take the picture, for example, and you can prop the phone up for photos or video without holding it.

How does it compare with the iPhone 18 Pro?

The two phones are built for different priorities.

The Duo gives you that much bigger folding screen and more room for multitasking, reading, gaming and video. The iPhone 18 Pro, meanwhile, has Apple's more advanced camera system, including a dedicated Telephoto camera and up to 8x optical-quality zoom. The Duo tops out at 2x optical-quality zoom.

In other words, $1,999 doesn't automatically buy you the "best" iPhone in every category. You're paying for an iPhone that can do something no previous iPhone could: fold open into a much bigger device.

What does the fold feel like in real life?

That's one thing a spec sheet can't really answer, but people who have already handled the Duo are starting to weigh in.

In its hands-on first impressions, The Verge found the crease difficult to feel and highlighted the smooth transition between the outer and inner screens. It also noted that the Duo's 5.4-inch outer screen feels relatively compact compared with many current smartphones.

The Wall Street Journal's Nicole Nguyen came away intrigued by the idea of having an iPhone and small tablet in one device, while also pointing to the $1,999 price and the uncertainty that comes with a first-generation product.

Those are early impressions, not long-term reviews. We'll know much more about how the Duo holds up in everyday life once it's actually in consumers' hands.

So ... is it worth $1,999?

For most people, that probably comes down to one question: How badly do you want an iPhone that folds?

If a regular iPhone already does everything you need, the Duo's $800 premium over the iPhone 18 Pro is substantial. But if you've ever wished your phone could turn into a bigger screen for streaming, reading, gaming or juggling two apps at once, this is the first iPhone built specifically to do that.

There's also no need to decide just yet. The iPhone Duo goes up for preorder Oct. 16 and arrives Oct. 23, giving shoppers some time to see full reviews before making the nearly $2,000 decision.

What else did Apple announce?

The foldable may have gotten much of the attention, but it wasn't Apple's only big reveal.

As Patch reported following Apple's Sept. 9 event, the company also introduced the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, AirPods 5, Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4.

The iPhone 18 Pro lineup gets new camera features and AI upgrades, while Apple's latest Apple Watch and AirPods also received updates.

Those products arrive Sept. 18. The Duo makes its debut about a month later, giving curious shoppers a little more time to decide whether Apple's first foldable iPhone is worth the price.
