3 Teens Killed After Stolen Vehicle Crashes During I-395 Police Pursuit

ARLINGTON, VA — Three teenagers were killed and a fourth remained hospitalized after a stolen vehicle fleeing a Virginia State Police trooper crashed Sunday morning on an Interstate 395 exit ramp in Arlington, according to an update from state police.

The driver, a 16-year-old boy from Silver Spring, Maryland, and a 16-year-old male passenger, also from Silver Spring, died after being transported to area hospitals, police said. A third passenger, a 17-year-old boy whose hometown was not known, died at the scene.

A 16-year-old girl from Alexandria was hospitalized and remained in serious but stable condition, according to police.

None of the four teenagers was wearing a seat belt, police said. The 16-year-old driver did not have a valid driver's license.

Pursuit Lasted About 2 Minutes

At about 12:45 a.m. Sunday, a Virginia State Police trooper spotted a stolen vehicle near Stevenson Road and South Walker Street in Alexandria, according to police.

The trooper attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver refused to stop and a pursuit began, police said.

The vehicle entered northbound Interstate 395 and attempted to take the Shirlington Road exit at a high rate of speed. The driver lost control on the exit ramp, and the vehicle ran off the right side of the ramp and crashed into a jersey wall, according to police.

State police said the pursuit lasted approximately two minutes and covered about five miles.

The vehicle had been reported stolen in Prince George's County, Maryland, on Saturday two days before the crash, according to police.

Three Teenagers Die From Injuries

Virginia State Police troopers, Arlington County Police, Arlington County Fire and Rescue, Alexandria Police and Alexandria Fire and Rescue personnel provided emergency medical care to the vehicle's occupants after the crash.

The 17-year-old passenger was pronounced dead at the scene. The 16-year-old driver and 16-year-old male passenger were taken to area hospitals, where they later died from their injuries.

The 16-year-old girl was also transported to a hospital. Police said she remained hospitalized in serious but stable condition.

Virginia State Police are investigating the crash.
