Arlington Offers PrEP Services Regardless Of Residency Or Insurance

Arlington Public Health now offers PrEP, HIV testing and follow-up care, with reduced- or no-cost services for eligible patients.

ARLINGTON, VA — Arlington Public Health has added a medication to prevent HIV to its clinic services, with care available regardless of residency, immigration status or health insurance coverage, according to a county announcement Tuesday.

The medication, known as pre-exposure prophylaxis, or PrEP, helps prevent HIV in people who are HIV-negative. When taken as prescribed, it is up to 99 percent effective at preventing HIV through sexual contact, the county said.

Through its STI and Family Planning Clinic, Arlington Public Health now provides daily oral PrEP using generic Truvada, along with HIV and sexually transmitted infection testing, prevention counseling, ongoing monitoring and follow-up care. Eligible patients can pick up medication the same day.

“PrEP is one of the most effective tools available to prevent HIV, yet many people who could benefit from it still face barriers to access,” said Dr. Deidra D. Parrish, Arlington Public Health’s health director.

The county said bringing medication, testing, counseling and ongoing support together is intended to help people who face difficulties navigating the health care system or obtaining preventive care.

Patients do not have to live in Arlington or have health insurance to receive PrEP services. Services are offered on a sliding fee scale, and patients may qualify for reduced- or no-cost care. The clinic accepts referrals from health care providers as well as self-referrals.

The county described PrEP as an option for anyone seeking additional protection against HIV, particularly people at increased risk.
