• Planners endorse short-term rental ordinance (gazettejournal.net) — Mathews County planners have unanimously endorsed a zoning change that would require all short-term rental owners to obtain a business license before operating, sending the proposal to the Board of Supervisors for a vote on Aug. 20. The commission heard one resident question whether the rules will be enforced and also welcomed new planning staff, including director Josh Bartlett and part-time planner Ted Costin. 
• Here's the status of drought in Hampton Roads (wvtf.org) — Mathews County is now under voluntary water restrictions from Aqua Virginia as part of a broader statewide drought that has left Virginia with about eight inches less rain than normal this year. Residents are being urged to conserve by fixing leaks, running full loads of laundry and dishes, and cutting back on nonessential water use while officials monitor conditions and consider stronger measures.
