Reston Association Board Approves 'Good News' Budget

The Reston Association Board of Directors found significant savings, minimizing what would have otherwise been a larger increase in fees.

RESTON, VA — The Reston Association Board of Directors approved its 2027 budget Oct. 22, setting the annual property assessment at $900, up $10, or about 1.1%, from the current $890.

The association said a yearlong effort to identify efficiencies and reduce operating costs helped limit the increase while maintaining service levels and supporting investments in community amenities and infrastructure.

“This is truly a good news budget for our members,” Reston Association CEO Peter Lusk said.

According to an association news release, staff identified more than $550,000 in operating savings and efficiencies.

Separately, approximately $400,000 in offsets reduced the amount members would need to contribute to the 2027 capital program. Those offsets came from investment earnings, projects costing less than budgeted and canceled projects, as well as contributions from Friends of Reston for the Walker Nature Center and RA Trail Maintenance program.

The capital offsets lowered the assessment by approximately $18 per household from what it otherwise would have been, according to the release.

“The Board's responsibility is to ensure that member assessment dollars are managed thoughtfully and strategically,” Reston Association board President Travis Johnson said. “This budget demonstrates the value of disciplined planning and a continued focus on efficiency.”
