Second medical cannabis dispensary in state opens in Talladega (abc3340.com) — Montgomery's first Callie's Apothecary dispensary is already serving hundreds of patients, and its success is helping spur new locations like the one just opened in Talladega. Patients who once drove two hours to Montgomery for medical cannabis now have closer options as Alabama's tightly regulated program slowly expands, promising more access, jobs, and alternatives to opioids across the state. 
2. Montgomery Police Department holds promotion ceremony (waka.com) — Montgomery residents have new police leaders after a promotion ceremony at True Divine Baptist Church honored officers advancing to corporal, sergeant, lieutenant, and captain. Chief leadership praised families' support while newly promoted officers emphasized service, growth, and responsibility to the community as they step into higher-ranking roles.
3. Troy University addresses suicide prevention in college-aged students (waka.com) — Troy University's Montgomery campus just hosted Alabama's 2026 Higher Education Suicide Prevention Conference, drawing educators, health professionals, and community groups from across the state. Speakers focused on building campus–community partnerships, sharing evidence-based strategies, and using new grant support to better protect the mental health of college students and the wider Montgomery-area community.
4. Illuminate Montgomery brings professional lighting design workshop to local students (wsfa.com) — Downtown Montgomery is getting a creative boost as a new grant-funded partnership hires a local lighting designer to illuminate city murals and brings a hands-on lighting design workshop to Booker T. Washington Magnet High School students. Montgomery native Amber Whatley's two-day BlackOut program introduces teens to professional technical theatre and broader lighting careers, helping them see how these skills translate to concerts, entertainment, and even fashion design.
5. NOTICE Reminder: Vapor Products Tax Distribution - Alabama Department of Revenue (alabama.gov) — State officials are warning local governments that vapor products tax distributions could be delayed if they don't submit updated vendor and banking details by September 11, 2026. The Alabama Department of Revenue's Tobacco Tax Section in Montgomery is handling questions and forms, urging localities to confirm their STAARS information so funds can be deposited correctly and on time.
