Major I-85 widening project in Montgomery set to begin in October (wsfa.com) — Drivers in Montgomery should prepare for a three-and-a-half-year I-85 widening project starting Oct. 5, expanding the interstate to three lanes each way between Taylor Road and Jenkins Creek. Expect mostly overnight lane closures Sunday through Thursday, temporary traffic pattern changes at the Chantilly Parkway interchange, and some future weekend closures as bridges are replaced.
   

2. Jackson Hospital celebrates 80th anniversary following emergence from bankruptcy (waka.com) — Montgomery residents can take note that Jackson Hospital has officially emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy just as it celebrates 80 years of serving the community. Leaders highlighted the hospital's humble Pine Street beginnings, its growth to more than 300 beds, and the financial support from local governments and partners that helped secure its future in the city.
   

3. $13 Million in Grants Helping Alabama VAs Fight Veteran Homelessness (tuscaloosathread.com) — Veterans in Montgomery stand to benefit from more than $13 million in new federal grants aimed at fighting homelessness across Alabama. The Montgomery VA Medical Center, along with facilities in Tuscaloosa and Birmingham, will use the money to expand outreach, mental‑health care, and connections to emergency or transitional housing so at‑risk veterans can find stable places to live.
   

4. Doug Jones says he is 'the opposite of defund the police' (al.com) — Montgomery residents are at the center of a debate between gubernatorial candidates over how to tackle violent crime, with one calling the city a "warzone" and suggesting National Guard deployment. Doug Jones counters that crime is trending down statewide, argues for more resources and training for local police, and opposes state takeovers or "defund the police" approaches.
