📰 News we're reading

1. From Ma Rainey To AI: New Technology Amplifies An Old Fight Over Artist Control (njurbannews.com) — Round House Theatre in Bethesda is staging August Wilson's "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom" through Oct. 18, using the classic play to explore who controls artists' work in the age of AI. The production, led by actor Nicole Michelle Haskins, connects Ma Rainey's historic fight over her music to today's battles about digital replicas and AI-generated songs.

2. From Bethesda Magazine: 5 Montgomery County teachers who started in other fields (bethesdamagazine.com) — A longtime musician and former Justice Department litigator who now lives in Bethesda has returned to the classroom, teaching music at the Academy of the Holy Cross in Kensington and hoping to bring her Apollo Orchestra to campus. She's one of several Montgomery County educators highlighted for switching into teaching from other careers, showing how their life experience shapes classrooms in Rockville, Silver Spring, Gaithersburg and beyond.

3. DC Judge Permanently Closes Reflecting Pool Case Against MD Olympian (patch.com) — A D.C. judge has permanently dismissed the vandalism case against a 67‑year‑old Bethesda resident and three‑time Olympian accused of damaging the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. The ruling, which bars prosecutors from refiling charges, follows federal findings that contractor work, not the local cyclist's actions, caused the damage and lets him move on without the threat of renewed prosecution.

4. When one door closes, maybe it's time to move countries (marketplace.org) — A Bethesda resident laid off from a biomedical job is responding to U.S. science funding cuts by planning a move to Canada after a year of travel. They describe feeling out of step with friends who are settled in jobs or school, yet more confident about making big life pivots after years of pandemic‑era upheaval and frequent moves.
