WORCESTER, MA — An Auburn man has been indicted on a murder charge in connection with the death of a child who was severely injured more than a decade ago.

A Worcester County grand jury last week handed up the indictment against Steven Stuart, 35, of Auburn, in the death of 7-year-old Jayden Carlson, according to Worcester County District Attorney Joseph D. Early Jr.

Stuart was arraigned June 18 in Worcester County Superior Court on one count of murder and was held without bail. His next court date is scheduled for July 20.

In September 2015, Stuart was convicted of assault and battery on a child causing serious bodily injury in connection with an August 2012 incident involving Jayden, according to the district attorney.

Jayden, who was 2 years old at the time of the assault, suffered severe life-altering injuries and ongoing medical complications. He died in December 2017 as a result of those injuries, according to the district attorney.

Stuart was sentenced to 6 to 8 years in state prison after the 2015 conviction.
