WORCESTER, MA — Worcester police detectives traveled to Florida this week to help arrest a man wanted in connection with a 2022 homicide.

Jayden Montes, 23, was taken into custody shortly after 6 a.m. July 1 in the Tampa area on a warrant charging him with murder in the death of Jazmin Rosario, according to Worcester police. Rosario was 17 when she was shot and killed in 2022, just days before her birthday.

Worcester Police Detective Sergeant William Pero and Detective Jay Magarian, both assigned to the department’s Unresolved Homicide Unit, traveled to Tampa to assist in the arrest.

Police said detectives continued investigating the case with help from the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office and developed probable cause to charge Montes with Rosario’s murder.

The arrest was made with help from the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Apprehension Central Florida/Caribbean Task Force, which included the Tampa Police Department, St. Petersburg Police Department, U.S. Marshals Service, Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office and Pasco County Sheriff’s Office, according to Worcester police. Montes was taken into custody without incident.

“While this arrest can’t undo the pain of Jazmin’s loss for her loved ones, it is an important step toward justice,” Worcester Police Chief Paul Saucier said in a statement. “The Worcester Police Department’s Unresolved Homicide Unit and every Worcester Police Officer will continue to work tirelessly each day to hold those responsible accountable.”
