Mystery Manhole Trespassers Emerge From NYC Sewer, Police Say

UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — The New York City Police Department is investigating after three people mysteriously emerged from an Upper East Side manhole in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

According to the NYPD, three people emerged from a manhole in front of 535 Park Ave., between East 61st Street and East 62nd Street, at 4:35 a.m.

The three people fled the location in two separate cars, heading northbound on Park Avenue.

This is the latest in a string of similar manhole incidents.

In late August, three people wearing headlamps and overalls climbed out of a manhole in Midtown, and in late May, more than a dozen people climbed into Brooklyn's sewer system through manholes at two locations, prompting a police investigation and a multi-agency search of the underground network.

It's unclear if the incidents are connected, and no arrests have been made, police officials said. The NYPD is investigating.
