📰 News we're reading

1. NC Attorney General asks for nearly $1.7M judgment against Holly Christina Photography in Raleigh (abc11.com) — A Raleigh wedding photography company could face nearly $1.7 million in restitution and penalties after the state attorney general asked a judge for a default judgment over undelivered wedding photos and videos. The filing follows dozens of local complaints, a prior injunction freezing assets, and allegations the owners failed to obey earlier court orders to return couples' images and money.

2. As Triangle businesses close, Madame B's Bakery expands 4 years after nearly shutting down (abc11.com) — A beloved Raleigh spot, Madame B's Bakery, is not only thriving but preparing to open a second location on Rock Quarry Road in southeast Raleigh, complete with a learning hub for Southeast Raleigh Magnet High School culinary students. After nearly closing four years ago, strong community support, rising demand, and a focus on fresh, locally loved recipes have fueled its expansion despite broader economic pressures on Triangle businesses.

3. Should a small town try a solar-powered garden? (unc.edu) — At Burkett Farm in Raleigh, a UNC public health student is testing how vegetables grow beneath solar panels versus full sun to see if solar-supported gardens can boost food access and resilience. Her practicum also includes working with the town of Enfield on a potential agrivoltaic community garden, aiming to create a model that other North Carolina communities, including Raleigh, could adapt for climate-smart food production.

4. North Carolina's July County and Area Unemployment Figures Released (nc.gov) — Raleigh currently has the lowest unemployment rate among North Carolina's metro areas at 3.2%, even as jobless rates rose in all 100 counties in July. Statewide, unemployment stands at 3.7%, with higher rates in places like Edgecombe and Halifax Counties and lower rates in Currituck County.
