SAMHSA Awards $600,000 Grant to Fund Rural EMS Training Program (jems.com) — Portsmouth's EMS and fire departments are eligible for a share of a new $600,000 federal grant that will fund free EMT training, overdose-response support, and on-site simulations in Rhode Island's rural communities. Starting September 30, 2026, local agencies can enroll to receive licensure seats, help launching buprenorphine programs, and stronger connections to treatment providers, all at no cost to personnel or departments.

2. Portsmouth police stopped pursuit before fatal crash (eastbayri.com) — A Portsmouth police officer ended an attempted traffic stop on West Main Road shortly before the fleeing car crashed in Middletown, killing a young child and seriously injuring two adults. Middletown police say the driver, from the Bronx, now faces multiple DUI- and endangerment-related charges while state police help reconstruct the collision. Portsmouth officers assisted at the scene.

3. Little Compton Schools OK Strategic Plan, Widen AC Project (upriseri.com) — Little Compton's School Committee just approved a new strategic plan and superintendent goals while exploring an expanded air-conditioning project that could cool up to 11 classrooms. During the meeting, members also highlighted that Portsmouth High School is now ranked fourth in Rhode Island, and shared updates on finances, new staff, and upcoming policy work on issues like artificial intelligence and student electronics.
