• ETSU researcher sheds light on extinct marine mammal's ancient journey (elizabethton.com) — From her base in Johnson City at ETSU, Dr. Kumiko Matsui has reinterpreted a decades-old fossil from northern Japan as belonging to a juvenile Desmostylus, an extinct marine mammal. By pairing the bone with rediscovered archival records, her team pieced together how this unusual herbivore grew, migrated across the North Pacific, and ultimately vanished millions of years ago.
