10 Killed In Virginia Crashes Over Labor Day Weekend, State Police Say

Ten people were killed in eight crashes on Virginia roads over Labor Day weekend, including three pedestrians and three people who died in a single crash in Fairfax County, according to Virginia State Police.

Three pedestrians were killed during the holiday period, one in Emporia and two along Interstate 395, including one in Fairfax County and another in Alexandria.

Three other people were killed Sunday in a crash on Interstate 66 in Fairfax County. Fatal crashes were also reported in Isle of Wight, New Kent, Lancaster and Rockbridge counties.

Fairfax County recorded two fatal crashes that killed four people, the highest death toll among the localities identified by state police.

"Drivers need to make sure they avoid distractions and are aware of their surroundings at all times," Lt. Col. Todd Taylor, director of the Virginia State Police Bureau of Field Operations, said. "But pedestrians have a role to play in keeping the roads safe as well."

The statewide Labor Day death toll was unchanged from 2025, when 10 people were also killed during the holiday period.

Labor Day Enforcement

Virginia State Police increased patrols over the holiday as part of Operation C.A.R.E., a nationwide traffic safety initiative.

Troopers cited 2,823 drivers for speeding and 1,571 for reckless driving. Another 74 people were charged with driving under the influence, including five accused of driving under the influence of drugs.

Troopers also issued 514 citations for seat belt violations and 94 for child restraint violations. State police responded to 848 crashes during the holiday period.
