Summer Fun: Free and low-cost summer camp available now in Chesapeake (wtkr.com) — Parents in Chesapeake still have a chance to grab free or low-cost spots in the city’s Youth Summer Break Camp for kids ages 6 to 12. Drop-in camps at Chesapeake CARES Center, Crestwood Elementary, and Sparrow Road Intermediate run July 6 to Aug. 14, Monday through Thursday. Registration must be done in person, and some locations are already full.

2. Chesapeake community mourns 24-year-old Indian River Middle School coach who died in car crash (wtkr.com) — Chesapeake residents are grieving 24-year-old coach and teacher’s assistant Dylan Farrer, who died after a single-car crash on Mt. Pleasant Road early June 28. He coached wrestling and baseball at Indian River Middle and was preparing to become a full-time teacher. The community is raising donations for his family, and Chesapeake Public Schools are offering counseling support for affected students.

Ex-Sentara maintenance worker gets 18-month term after pleading guilty to filming women in bathroom (pilotonline.com) — A former Sentara maintenance worker has been sentenced to 18 months in jail after secretly recording people in a unisex restroom at a Sentara pediatrics office building on Edwin Drive in Chesapeake, with investigators finding years of images. Chesapeake victims, including a local police employee, described lasting anxiety about using public restrooms as the judge ordered sex offender registration, counseling, and electronic monitoring.

4. 39-year-old inmate dies after medical emergency at Chesapeake Correctional Center (pilotonline.com) — A 39-year-old man jailed at Chesapeake Correctional Center died Wednesday after suffering an apparent medical emergency and being taken to a local hospital. Identified as Donelle Felder, he’d been held since January on serious felony charges. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine how he died, while Chesapeake Police and the Sheriff’s Office conduct separate investigations.
