Surge In Black Bears With Mange Raises Concerns

Mange cases appear to be on the rise among Virginia’s black bears, according to new reports.

WSLS reports getting numerous tips from residents who have spotted bears in poor condition. The mange issue seems to be the most severe in Roanoke, Franklin and Montgomery counties.

The Virginia Department of Wildlife has issued a fact sheet about bears and mange, explaining that mange is a highly contagious skin disease caused by a mite that burrows under the skin. It causes intense itching, thickened skin and hair loss. Severe infections can leave animals depressed, emaciated and unaware of their surroundings.

The VDW says their research shows the most common cause of mange in Virginia bears is Sarcoptes scabiei, a mite that can only be seen with a microscope.

State officials ask anyone who spots a bear with mange to call the Wildlife Conflict Helpline at (855) 571-9003.
