• Friends of Southwest Virginia to launch free tourism training program this month (wcyb.com) — Free tourism training workshops are coming to Floyd on October 27, offering local frontline workers and business owners practical skills to better serve visitors and promote area attractions. Sessions at the Profitt House Community Room are free but require advance registration due to limited space. Additional workshops follow in Abingdon and Norton later that week.
   

• First Steps celebrates Early Childhood Chmpions (pcpatriot.com) — Educators and health professionals serving Floyd County children are being honored as Early Childhood Champion nominees, including staff from Floyd County Public Schools and Head Start in Floyd. The regional First Steps program highlighted their work alongside peers from neighboring New River Valley localities. Nominations for the 2027 awards will open next spring for more local champions.
   

• Four sentenced for conspiring to illegally distribute oxycodone and other controlled substances (thelebanonnews.com) — A federal drug conspiracy case involving fraudulent opioid and cough-syrup prescriptions reached sentencing, and investigators say some prescriptions were filled at pharmacies in Floyd. Four Maryland residents received prison terms or time served for working with a Virginia doctor to distribute controlled substances across multiple states. The case highlights how national drug schemes can touch small local pharmacies.
