Virginia law allows winners of prizes worth $1 million or more to claim prizes anonymously. In those cases, the Virginia Lottery does not publicly disclose the winner’s identity.

The winner and his wife were watching their grandchildren when he realized he had matched all six numbers, according to the Virginia Lottery. He initially did not tell his wife about the prize. After the children were settled and watching television, he told her the news, lottery officials said.

The 7-Eleven that sold the ticket will receive a $10,000 bonus from the Virginia Lottery for selling a $1 million winning ticket.

Bank a Million is played only in Virginia. Drawings are held Wednesdays and Saturdays at 11 p.m. The top prizes — $1 million, $500,000 and $250,000 — are calculated so winners receive the prize amount after federal and state tax withholdings.

The odds of winning the top prize are 1 in 3.8 million. The odds of winning any prize are 1 in 18.3.

All Virginia Lottery profits go to K-12 education in Virginia. The ticket was bought in Fredericksburg, which received more than $2.5 million in lottery funds for K-12 education last fiscal year, according to the Virginia Lottery.

In fiscal year 2025, the Virginia Lottery raised more than $901 million for K-12 education, making up about 10 percent of Virginia’s total K-12 school budget.
