Severe Storms Could Hit Northern Virginia This Afternoon

NORTHERN VIRGINIA — A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect across Northern Virginia until 9 p.m. Monday as storms capable of becoming severe threaten the region during the afternoon and evening.

The National Weather Service’s Baltimore-Washington office issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch around 1:15 p.m. The watch covers 34 Virginia jurisdictions, including Arlington, Alexandria, Fairfax County and the cities of Fairfax and Falls Church.

Other Northern Virginia communities covered by the watch include Manassas, Manassas Park, Culpeper, Fauquier, Loudoun, Prince William and Stafford. The watch also includes Washington, D.C., and 15 Maryland counties.

Storms Possible Through Monday Night

Showers and thunderstorms are most likely between 2 and 5 p.m. Monday, according to the National Weather Service forecast provided for the region. Some storms could become severe.

Monday afternoon will otherwise be partly sunny, with a high near 88 degrees and a southwest wind around 6 mph. The chance of precipitation is 50 percent.

Additional showers and thunderstorms are possible before 2 a.m. Tuesday, and some storms could be severe. Another chance of showers develops after 4 a.m. Skies will remain mostly cloudy, with a low near 69 and a 30 percent chance of precipitation.

Rain Chances Continue Through Friday

Northern Virginia could see a brief break Tuesday morning before shower chances return around noon, according to NWS' seven-day forecast. Thunderstorms are possible after 2 p.m., with a high near 86 and a 40 percent chance of precipitation.

Showers and thunderstorms become likely Tuesday night. The chance of precipitation rises to 70 percent, with a low around 66. Rainfall totals are expected to remain below one-tenth of an inch in most places, although thunderstorms could produce higher amounts.

Wednesday will be partly sunny, with a high near 84. The forecast calls for a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2 p.m. Storm chances continue into early Wednesday night before gradually diminishing, with an overnight low near 66.

Mostly sunny conditions are forecast Thursday, when the high should reach about 85, according to the forecast.There is a 20 percent chance of afternoon showers and thunderstorms. Storm chances increase to 30 percent Thursday night, when the low will be around 67.

Another unsettled period is possible Friday. The forecast calls for a 50 percent chance of showers, with thunderstorms also possible after 8 a.m. The high will be near 83. Shower and thunderstorm chances fall to 30 percent Friday night as temperatures drop to around 61.

Saturday will be partly sunny and cooler, with a high near 81. A slight chance of showers and thunderstorms returns Saturday night, when the low will be around 64.

Sunday is expected to be mostly sunny, with a high near 84 and a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms.
