SPOTSYLVANIA, VA — A Spotsylvania man woke his wife with some unexpected news after checking his Powerball ticket on the Virginia Lottery app: He had just won $100,000.

"I think I won $100,000!" Brett Horner exclaimed after discovering his ticket matched five numbers in the Sept. 12 Powerball drawing, according to the Virginia Lottery.

He matched four of the five white balls plus the Powerball number, a combination that normally pays $50,000.

However, Horner spent an extra dollar to add the Power Play option when he bought his ticket. That decision doubled his winnings to $100,000.

The winning numbers for the Sept. 12 drawing were 14, 16, 23, 58 and 69, with a Powerball number of 3.

Horner selected his own numbers rather than using a computer-generated combination.

Under Virginia law, lottery winners can choose to remain anonymous when claiming their prizes. Horner opted to have his identity made public.

The odds of matching all six Powerball numbers to win the jackpot are approximately 1 in 292.2 million. The overall odds of winning any Powerball prize are about 1 in 25.

Powerball drawings are held Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays at 10:59 p.m.

According to the Virginia Lottery, all lottery profits support K-12 public education in the state.

Spotsylvania County received more than $20.5 million in lottery funding for public education during the last fiscal year.

Statewide, the Virginia Lottery generated more than $914 million for K-12 education in fiscal 2026, accounting for approximately 10 percent of the state's public school budget.
