Fredericksburg Man Charged With Felony DUI After Stafford Hit-And-Run

FREDERICKSBURG, VA — A Fredericksburg man was arrested after deputies said he rear-ended another vehicle, fled the scene and was later found showing signs of intoxication in Stafford County.

According to the Stafford County Sheriff's Office, deputies responded to a reported hit-and-run on Stafford Lakes Parkway at about 4:55 p.m. Thursday. Investigators said Gordon Bruce, 60, rear-ended another vehicle before running a red light and leaving the scene.

Deputies located Bruce's vehicle nearby with significant front-end damage. Investigators said they found several opened alcoholic beverages inside the vehicle before locating Bruce sitting on a curb nearby.

According to the sheriff's office, Bruce had an unsteady balance, slurred speech and a strong odor of alcohol. Deputies said he refused to perform field sobriety tests or provide a preliminary breath sample.

An investigation also determined Bruce was wanted on outstanding warrants from Spotsylvania County, according to the sheriff's office.

Felony DUI Charge Filed

Bruce was arrested and taken to the Stafford County Sheriff's Office, where authorities said he again refused to provide a breath sample. He was charged with driving under the influence, refusal to submit to testing, hit-and-run, drinking while operating a motor vehicle, driving after forfeiture of license, driving with a revoked license, willfully circumventing an ignition interlock system and driving without a title. He was held without bond at the Rappahannock Regional Jail.

Stafford General District Court records show prosecutors have charged Bruce with felony driving under the influence as a third or subsequent offense within 10 years, along with misdemeanor charges including refusal to submit to a breath test, hit-and-run involving property damage, driving while suspended or revoked, driving after a DUI-related license suspension, drinking while driving and operating an unlicensed motor vehicle. A preliminary hearing on the felony DUI charge is scheduled for Sept. 24.

Outstanding Spotsylvania Cases

The outstanding warrants referenced by the sheriff's office were connected to multiple Spotsylvania County cases.

Court records show Bruce pleaded guilty in February to an amended felony grand larceny charge stemming from a January 2025 case. He was sentenced to five years in prison, with four years and six months suspended. Charges of receiving stolen credit cards and felony credit card fraud connected to the same case were dismissed by prosecutors.

Records also show Bruce has a show-cause hearing scheduled for Aug. 5 related to that suspended sentence.

In a separate Spotsylvania case, a judge revoked part of Bruce's previously suspended sentence in February after finding he violated the terms of his probation.

As with all criminal charges, the allegations against Bruce have not been proven in court, and he is presumed innocent unless convicted.
