📰 News we're reading

1. Durham water supply reaches 227 days as Stage 2 continues (soduwelikelocal.news) — Durham's water supply has improved to an estimated 227 days, but Stage 2 restrictions remain in place as Lake Michie and Little River Reservoir are still only about 56% full. The city continues buying water from Cary, drawing from Teer Quarry, and enforcing strict limits on irrigation, car washing, and large users' consumption. Officials warn Stage 3 remains possible if demand rises or rains slow.

2. Man dies while crossing intersection (dailytarheel.com) — A 27-year-old Carrboro man was struck and killed early Tuesday while crossing U.S. 15-501 at Mount Moriah Road in Durham, where there is no marked crosswalk or pedestrian signal. His death has prompted NCDOT to evaluate whether new safety measures are needed at this busy eight-lane intersection, though any changes would require coordination between Durham and Chapel Hill.

3. House catches fire on Ken Street, Durham fire officials say (cbs17.com) — Durham firefighters spent Monday afternoon knocking down a house fire on Kent Street, where more than 35 responders contained the blaze without any injuries. Crews aggressively attacked the flames, searched the building, and limited damage mostly to the area of origin, with Durham police and EMS assisting. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

4. College of Education Faculty Share Significance of Durham's Historic Russell School Nationwide through Virtual Tour (ncsu.edu) — Durham's Historic Russell School, the last remaining Rosenwald school in Durham County, is now accessible worldwide through a new virtual tour created with NC State partners. Local educators hope the project helps teachers everywhere bring Black educational history and Durham's own community story into their classrooms. The tour highlights unique building details and supports new lesson plans for K-12 students.

5. How gas prices have changed in Durham in the last week (rrdailyherald.com) — Drivers in the Durham-Chapel Hill area are paying about $3.79 for regular gas this week, roughly a dime above the statewide average and up sharply from last year. Diesel prices have climbed even more, now topping $5.40 per gallon. The report also compares Durham's costs with some of the cheapest and most expensive metros nationwide.
