Durham schools approve $1.1 million in boiler replacements as federal funds near expiration (asumag.com) — Durham Public Schools has approved about $1.1 million to replace aging boilers at Hillandale Elementary, Oak Grove Elementary, and Riverside High, using federal pandemic-relief funds that expire in 2026. The work is part of a larger $6 million ARPA-backed push to modernize heating, HVAC, and safety systems across Durham's aging school buildings.
   

2. 15-year-old facing charges after shots fired at officers during scuffle, Durham police say (abc11.com) — A 15-year-old was arrested after allegedly robbing someone, then firing two shots at Durham police officers during a struggle on Durham-Chapel Hill Boulevard; no one was hurt. Mayor Leo Williams and new Police Chief Stephanie Mardis responded to the scene, stressing the need to address youth gun violence through better jobs, housing, and community support in Durham.
   

3. Police: Man killed in shooting Tuesday on Eva Street in Durham (wral.com) — A man was killed Tuesday evening in a shooting on the 900 block of Eva Street in Durham, where officers found him with multiple gunshot wounds and could not save him. Police say the incident appears isolated and are asking anyone with information to contact Durham police or CrimeStoppers to help the ongoing investigation.
   

4. Durham Clinic's Garden Water Feature Named Most Likely, Not Confirmed, Source of Amoeba That Killed North Carolina Teen (medicaldaily.com) — Health investigators say an interactive garden water feature at El Futuro, a Durham County mental health clinic, is the most likely but not confirmed source of a rare amoeba infection that killed a central North Carolina teen. The feature has been drained and remains closed while officials urge families across the region to be cautious with warm, untreated water in fountains, splash features, and backyard creeks.
   

5. 'A Mirror to Our Best Selves': Preserving Queer History and Literature in Durham (indyweek.com) — Durham's LGBTQ Center is preserving local queer history through its People's Archive and a revitalized community library that highlight stories, photos, and books tied to the city. Residents can currently visit the library by appointment, and later this fall it will reopen with regular hours, plus a September 27 scanning event at Durham Central Park to add community mementos.
