📰 News we're reading
1. Free International Overdose Awareness Day Event Brings Community Together (virginia.gov) — Newport News residents can access free Narcan, overdose-response training, and other support at an International Overdose Awareness Day event on Monday, August 31, at the Love the Tree of Life Clinic on 25th Street. Health officials say overdose deaths in Newport News have fallen since 2022 but remain a serious concern, and they're inviting the whole community to learn, remember lost loved ones, and pick up practical resources.

2. Client waited too long before suing former attorney (valawyersweekly.com) — A legal malpractice case originating in Newport News Circuit Court was dismissed because the client waited too long to sue his former attorney, and an appeals court has now affirmed that decision. Judges ruled the shorter statute of limitations applied and that later emails and billing entries didn't extend the attorney's work on the underlying litigation, so the filing deadline had already passed.

3. Business Notes: Virginia Living Museum, HRSD partner; nonprofits awarded $1.2M (pilotonline.com) — Newport News residents can now sign up for Virginia's free VA Deed Alert program to get email notices whenever land records are filed in their name, helping spot potential fraud. Local families also benefit from the YMCA's Learn to Swim partnership, which offers free water safety lessons to second graders in Newport News schools, plus other regional investments in education, arts, and infrastructure.
