1. 'Hearts shattered': Family says after young Durham woman dies in East Main Street shooting last week (cbs17.com) — A Durham family is grieving after 23-year-old DaShawna Williams died following a shooting on East Main Street near Angier Avenue and Fayetteville Street early last Friday. Police say a man was also critically wounded, and no arrests have been announced. Investigators are asking anyone with information to contact Durham police or Crime Stoppers, which is offering a cash reward.
   

2. Durham's Duke Street will be closed a bit longer for South Ellerbe wetland project (newsobserver.com) — Drivers in Durham will face extended closures on Duke Street between West Trinity and Monmouth through Sept. 25, with West Trinity itself closing Sept. 28–Dec. 31 for utility work. The disruptions support the $41 million South Ellerbe Restoration, transforming a Trinity Park site into a wetland and trail hub that will filter stormwater before it reaches Falls Lake and eventually connect to the future Durham Rail Trail.
   

3. Durham County Data Center Moratorium Explained (soduwelikelocal.news) — Durham County leaders are weighing a nine‑month pause on most new large data centers, AI computing sites, and crypto-mining projects in unincorporated areas starting August 25. Smaller centers under 100,000 square feet could still proceed, but only with water‑saving cooling and non‑diesel backup power. The City of Durham already has a similar moratorium set to end in May.
   

4. Extreme heat, drought cut into business at Durham Garden center (abc11.com) — Durham's ongoing drought and extreme heat are straining both residents and local businesses, with Stone Brothers & Byrd garden center hand-watering plants multiple times a day and losing hundreds of dollars in inventory. The city remains under Stage 2 water restrictions, has logged 320 violation reports, and urges continued conservation as reservoirs slowly recover and officials hope to avoid stricter limits.
   

5. Durham woman loses nearly $6,000 in bank impersonation scam: 'Heartbroken' (abc11.com) — A Durham woman says she lost nearly $6,000 after scammers spoofed her State Employees' Credit Union phone number and convinced her to share online banking details. The money was moved through her Cash App account, and both the bank and app say she's unlikely to be reimbursed, prompting renewed warnings about caller ID spoofing and impersonation scams.
