📰 News we're reading

• Hurricane Season 2026 begins June 1: What Outer Banks residents and visitors need to know (islandfreepress.org) — Hurricane season is officially underway, and officials are reminding Outer Banks residents, including those in Nags Head, that even a below-average forecast can still bring dangerous flooding and storm surge. The guide explains why storm category isn’t everything, recalls past Nags Head-area flooding, and outlines evacuation planning, supply kits, and special medical needs registration so you can prepare before a storm forms.

• Community Organizations host 'Walk for Democracy' in Nags Head on Flag Day (outerbanksvoice.com) — A peaceful “Walk for Democracy” is planned in Nags Head on Sunday, June 14, from 3–5 p.m. along the bypass near Dowdy Park, with marching on Croatan Highway between Bonnet and Windjammer streets. Local civic and faith groups are inviting residents and visitors to bring flags, signs, and water, with parking available at Dowdy Park and Nags Head Elementary School.

• Trump administration to dismantle Northwest ocean monitoring system (seattletimes.com) — A federally funded ocean monitoring system that supplied key data for a marine renewable energy test site in Nags Head is being dismantled by the Trump administration.
