📰 News we're reading
• Hampton Roads localities ponder data center development (virginiabusiness.com) — Chesapeake officials have paused new data center applications and now require council-approved conditional use permits, limiting facilities to industrial zones and banning groundwater connections while they rewrite zoning rules. Alongside similar moves in Virginia Beach and Suffolk, these changes could shape how much heavy digital infrastructure, noise, and utility demand ends up near Chesapeake neighborhoods and job centers in the coming years.

• Va. and N.C. Voter's Guide: Everything you need to know about the 2026 Election (wtkr.com) — Chesapeake voters face a busy 2026 ballot, with five at-large city council seats and five school board seats up for election alongside statewide races, constitutional amendments, and a proposed one-percent sales tax for school construction in several nearby cities. This guide lays out key voting dates, major statewide contests, and how to look up exactly who and what will appear on your Chesapeake ballot.

• Chesapeake FD changing to 42-hour week to improve quality of life, maintain staffing (wavy.com) — Chesapeake firefighters will soon move from a 56-hour to a 42-hour workweek, a major shift city leaders say will improve safety, health, and emergency response for residents. To make the new schedule work, the Chesapeake Fire Department plans to hire up to 70 firefighters in early 2027 and eventually add about 140 positions, plus a full-time recruiter, to stay competitive with nearby cities.
